Pipe Size Chart: PVC, CPVC & GI Sizes in mm and Inches

Pipe sizes are quoted by nominal bore in inches (½", ¾", 1"…) which maps to a millimetre size. Use this chart to match PVC, CPVC and GI pipe sizes and pick the right one for the job.

Plumbing pipe is sized by nominal bore — a name like ½" or 25 mm that refers roughly to the inside diameter. Fittings (elbows, tees, valves) are matched to the same nominal size. This chart covers the common sizes we stock in PVC, CPVC and GI.

Inch to mm size chart

Nominal (inch)Nominal (mm)Typical use
½"15 mmTaps, branch lines to fixtures
¾"20 mmMain branch & tank-to-line runs
1"25 mmHouse supply mains, risers
1¼"32 mmBuilding risers, pump lines
1½"40 mmRisers, larger supply
2"50 mmMains, pump & tank lines
2½"65 mmBuilding mains, fire lines
3"80 mmLarge mains, fire-fighting
4"100 mmLarge supply / drainage

Drainage (SWR) pipe sizes

Drainage and waste pipe is sized differently — by outside diameter in mm:

SizeTypical use
75 mmWaste water (basins, sinks, floor traps)
110 mmSoil / WC lines
160 mmLarge external drains, mains

How to choose the right size

  • Fixtures (tap, WC, basin): ½" (15 mm) branch lines.
  • Home supply main: ¾"–1" (20–25 mm) depending on number of taps and pressure.
  • Building riser / pump line: 1¼"–2" (32–50 mm) and up, by load.
  • Drainage: 75 mm waste, 110 mm soil, 160 mm external.

FAQs

Is pipe size measured by inside or outside diameter?

Pipe is sold by "nominal" size, which is close to the inside bore — not the exact outside diameter. A "1 inch" pipe is roughly 1 inch internally; the outside is larger because of the wall thickness. Fittings are matched to the same nominal size.

What size pipe is used for a house water connection?

Main supply lines into a home are commonly ¾" or 1" (20–25 mm); branch lines to individual taps are usually ½" (15 mm). Drainage uses larger 75–110 mm pipe.

Do PVC, CPVC and GI use the same size names?

They use the same nominal inch sizes (½", ¾", 1"…) so fittings match by size name, but exact outer diameters and wall thicknesses differ by material and class. Always confirm material and class when buying.
